- How will I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
All children are ready to learn all the time but being ready for school is sometimes altogether different. The following are some guidelines that may be helpful in evaluating your child’s readiness to begin kindergarten at Lincoln Academy:
Attention span/ability to focus: Can your child begin a task promptly with supplies already gathered, follow directions, and finish on time without daydreaming and without being easily distracted? Your child should be able to work independently but know when it is appropriate to ask for help.
Communication skills: Can your child use appropriate language to express his/her needs, answer questions, and resolve conflicts? Your child should have an age appropriate, well-developed vocabulary, correct use of pronouns, and clear speech.
Ability to separate from parents: Does your child accept limits, follow safety rules, respect the rights of others, share, and play cooperatively even if you aren’t there?
Kindergarten children are eager to learn, interested in symbols, stories and books. Memory, perception, concentration, and capacity for attention increase as they mature. Carefully evaluating your child’s readiness can help to ensure that school will be a happy, successful experience.
- What happens if I decide my child is not ready and needs to wait a year? If you have been offered a registration opportunity, you may inform the office you wish to hold your child for the following year's class. At that time, you will be informed that your child will be guaranteed an opening with no preference to AM or PM kindergarten. Lincoln Academy also offers a tuition based preschool that helps prepare students for kindergarten.
